Ride a Helicopter at Backwoods 2019! (Interview)

📸: Jamie Seed Photography

Recently we got to catch up with Chuck, who runs Tulsa County Helicopters in Tulsa, OK. Tulsa County Helicopters will be on-site at Backwoods at Mulberry Mountain 2019, giving people rides all weekend long!

Hey Chuck, how's it going?

I'm doing great! Getting ready for an amazing weekend at Backwoods. Yourself?

Same here! Tell us about your company Tulsa County Helicopters.

My buddy and I started Tulsa County Helicopters eleven years ago: we had just graduated flight school, and were were trying to find a way to continue flying. All we had was a rented helicopter, an E-Z up tent, and my pickup truck. We would drive around and offer helicopter rides at pretty much any large outdoor gathering we could find… since then, we’ve bought our own helicopter, and built a successful commercial business out of it. We fly every day from our home base of operations in Tulsa, but we still travel to outdoor festivals like Backwoods. That’s how we first got started, and we like to stay true to our roots.

How did your relationship with Backwoods start?

We first started offering our rides at Backwoods when the festival was in Stroud, OK. The problem was, there was not a whole lot to see out there besides the venue itself. We still had a great time out there regardless, but I was ecstatic when they moved the festival to Mulberry Mountain. You can't find any better views than on Mulberry - it’s seriously our favorite place to fly!

Backwoods at Mulberry Mountain 2019 is less than 2 weeks away! When will you be there?

We will be out there on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Each day we’ll be flying from around noon until the sun sets.

How can people book a ride with you?

Well the process is about as simple and straightforward as you can get… all you have to do is show up at our tent! If you don’t know where that is, check the 2019 festival map. If there’s no line, we will get you right on-board. It’s first come first serve.

What's the best time to fly?

Well, everyone wants to get their ride in during sunset. It’s beautiful, but that’s also when the line starts to get really really long. If you really want to fly at that time, plan appropriately and show up early. Other than that, anytime when there is no line is the best time to fly!

Very good to know. How long are the rides typically?

The rides are six minutes long. That may seem pretty short, but what’s great about Mulberry Mountain is a six minute ride there is worth more than a thirty minute ride anywhere else. There’s so much natural beauty to see over there… as soon as we pick up and I clear the tree line, that’s when everybody gets their “aha” moment. When people are driving to the venue, it’s impossible to take in all of the beauty of the scenery. Once you take them above the tree line, it’s a whole different world. That’s when it really hits them.

Are the helicopter rides awesome?

Oh yeah, it’s a fantastic time. I usually play “welcome to the jungle” when I’m flying, so that should give you an idea of the mood. Not once in our eleven years of doing this have we ever had anyone say “I wish I hadn’t done that”. Sometimes it’s like a roller coaster ride, other times it’s peaceful. There are exciting parts to it, and there are tranquil parts to it. In six minutes, it covers just about every emotion you have.

How much will the rides be this year?

Rides are still $40 per person. There’s a small surcharge if you use a card, so I recommend paying in cash if you have it.

I’m sure people at Backwoods will want to go with their friends… how many people can go up in the helicopter at one time?

We can fit three passengers at a time!

Where can people find you on the internet?

Our website is www.tulsaheli.com, and we also have a Facebook page and a YouTube channel. At the festival, you can find us at our tent. (Again, if you don’t know where the tent is, check the 2019 festival map!)

We can’t wait! Thanks for taking the time. Anything else to add?

We’re looking forward to seeing everybody back on the mountain again! We’re ready to have a great time :)

Thanks to Chuck for doing this interview!

New Main Stage Design

Backwoods Stage_3Close your eyes and imagine walking through the woods and when you reach the top of a grassy hill the only thing you see is a massive castle in the middle of a quiet field. As you walk closer, dancing lights and music surround you. You look up to see the center eye of the stage through thousands of lasers and it draws you in with amazing graphics synced perfectly to the music. You just revisited Backwoods 2015.  The above photograph shows the actual stage (top) vs. design rendering (bottom).Backwoods Stage_1Stage Designer VJ Fader wants his audience to feel special and he is able to achieve that goal through visuals, lighting, and design. His 70’ tall and 140’ wide medieval castle design was one of the biggest stages the state of Oklahoma has ever seen and the impression it has left on its audience will not be forgotten. When you see images or video of that stage lit up, you know immediately that it’s Backwoods Music Festival.Backwoods Stage_2What does VJ Fader and Backwoods have planned for 2016? “Backwoods Donates Medical Equipment to Local Stroud Hospital”

Stroud Muncipal Hospital was established in 1978 as a result of the community banding together in hopes of making quality healthcare closer to home a possibility. The Hospital flourished and continued to serve the community throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. A tornado struck and tragically damaged the hospital resulting in closing for nearly two years. At the reopening the hospital was renamed Stroud Regional Medical Center. The center offers a number of services including inpatient medical and surgical services, physical and occupational therapy, scanning and ultrasound, full service laboratory testing, cardiology clinic services and much more. CEO of Stroud Regional Medical Service Center, Tommy Smith stated “Of course [we] will benefit from having a top of the line piece of Stryker equipment to replace our much older, hard to lift and role gurney”. The top of the line new piece of equipment is electronic and rises with the simple push of a button whereas the old gurney was manual and a challenge to rise, even when empty. When asked how often the gurney will be used, Smith replied “on a regular basis”. The gurney will be used when transferring patients from the emergency room to an inpatient room or to the helipad. Because of the medical center’s location off the Turner Turnpike and Highway 99, the emergency department receives a much higher volume of trauma patients than the average rural hospitals. Stroud Regional Medical Center prides itself in its compassionate and dedicated team and quality patient care. Because of their commitment, Backwoods Music Festival felt lead to donate to the cause and hope it makes an impact on the hospital as a whole and the patients individually. With the additional medical equipment, serving the Stroud community will be that much easier!Backwoods Donates $13,000 Gurney

Art in the Woods

Here at Backwoods Music Festival we take pride in our exceptional art installations and this year you’ll be excited to hear that we’re expanding and upgrading in ways you can’t even imagine! If you ask any previous Backwoods attendee, they’ll tell you our art installations are like that of no other festival around… but this year is going to be even more mind blowing! Backwoods 2016 is really making art a focal point, with the main concentration in the woods. Festival-goers can expect a lot more installations along with newly built portals, live painters, and some of your favorite things from the woods last year. In comparison to last year, the ranch will become home to elaborate new art installations from nationally recognized artists. These projects will redefine creativity and be visually appealing to the masses. Backwoods considers art to be of utmost importance. We want to stimulate and inspire the crowd on another level, in hopes that they really delve into the “Backwoods way” and have the most rewarding experience possible. Unlike previous years, we are going to include a whole transformational area in the music venue. In this area, alternative forms of art breaking the barriers of typical “art” will be offered. Scheduled yoga classes will be held, along with quiet times for meditation and sacred fire ceremonies for those interested. Many of this year’s art installations will be fully functional. There will be multiple interactive structures from shade coverings to mini cinemas and even mazes for your enjoyment. There is no specific theme to the madness. Rather than limiting ourselves and our festival goers to some sort of structure, we hope to elicit individuality and innovation to the best of our abilities. We seek to extract creativity rather than stifle it. If you’re interested in what’s to come, check out our featured artists here! The Imagine Nation - https://www.facebook.com/JointheImagineNationJamie Whitlow - https://www.facebook.com/KapturingKarma/Shane Woodley & Gregory Coye - http://www.coyeart.com/

Slip-N-Slide Shenanigans!

There’s nothing more necessary to subside the Oklahoma Labor Day heat than Backwoods Music Festival’s newest water attraction! The Slip-N-Slide will be free for all attendees and it will run during daylight hours for your amusement! Along with this attraction we’re including more water inflatables than in the past to guarantee a magical time for everyone. Besides all the exciting new improvements, we will also have some recurring activities like our co-ed water volleyball tournament and pool access will be available for VIP ticket holders. Even bringing your own hammock to string amongst a nearby tree is an option for relaxation between sets. This years Backwoods Music Festival is inevitably going to top the previous years so don’t forget your swimsuit and sunscreen for a blissful 3 days on the ranch.

Why Stage Design at Music Festivals May Trump the Artists on Stage

Everyone knows the lineup is the most important part of the music festival. People come for the music, not for the food trucks or the porta-potties. But as much as the music is a draw, there is another aspect of festival culture that makes the experience so unique: the stage.Stage design at music festivals, particularly EDM festivals, has become an attraction in itself. The more intricate the designs, the better the shows. Without the designs, your favorite artist is just performing on a blank stage. While the music is still great, the event itself is forgettable. With the designs and production, the crowd is more hyped, the artist gives a more energetic performance, and the experience is much more memorable. Plus the pictures and videos you take are way cooler to show to friends.Picture it from the artist’s perspective. On stage you are focused on giving a memorable performance and hyping up the crowd. With a blank stage, it takes a lot more to get the energy up to where it needs to be. But if you’re performing on a stage with an amazing design, the crowd is already excited and it makes it more fun to make music for them.Last year at Backwoods, we worked with Fader, a DJ and designer, to bring to life a main stage to take your breath away. We like to think it turned out pretty well. Check out the making of the design and creation of the Motherland stage for last year’s festival in our documentary “Backwoods Experience 2015”.[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpiAFhccKWs[/embed]This year, we are coming up with an entirely new design to make your favorite artists even more spectacular! We are working to bring bigger and better things to Backwoods. Want to see what we create? Buy your tickets to this year’s festival and prepare yourself for the experience of a lifetime!
